Rwandan nationality can be applied on the basis of nationality by birth on Rwandan territory, marriage, adoption, naturalization and/or Rwandan origin. One can also apply to renounce Rwandan Nationality and/or citizenship.

Nationality by birth on Rwandan territory:
•    Complete application form
•    Birth certificate
•    Certificate of identity
•    A document certifying that the applicant’s parents were legally residing in Rwanda at the time of their birth
•    Police clearance or other certificate proving that the applicant has never been sentenced to more than 6 months imprisonment or is not subject to legal proceedings 
•    Photocopy of passport, if any
•    Certificate of registration as foreigners if they reside in Rwanda
•    Two colored passport photographs with white background.
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Nationality by Marriage:
•    Complete application form
•    Birth certificate
•    Marriage certificate
•    Police clearance or other certificate proving that the applicant has never been sentenced to more than 6 months imprisonment or is not subject to legal proceedings 
•   Photocopy of passport and/or certificate of registration as a foreigner (for minors born before or after the marriage to  the Rwandan spouse, provide a birth certificate that establishes lineage with both spouses
•    Justification of shared common marital life for three (3) years through a certificate issued by the register of civil status at the place of marriage or the applicant’s residence
•    Photocopy of Rwanda identification card of the spouse or any other proof of their Rwandan nationality
•    Two colored passport photographs with white background
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable). 

Nationality by Adoption:
•    Complete application form
•    Birth certificate
•    Certificate of adoption issued by a competent authority
•    Photocopy of Rwandan ID of the adopter
•    Photocopy of passport, if any
•    Certificate of registration as foreigners if they reside in Rwanda
•    Two colored passport photographs with white background
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Nationality by Naturalization:
•    Complete application form
•    Birth certificate
•    Birth certificate of dependant if they are a minor
•    Photocopy of passport, if any
•    Certificate of registration as foreigners if they reside in Rwanda
•    Police clearance or certificate proving applicant to never have been sentenced to more than six months imprisonment or is not subject to legal proceedings 
•    Two colored passport photographs with white background
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Nationality by Rwandan origin:
•    Appointment with a Consular Officer, and bring the following with you
•    Birth certificate
•    Complete application form
•    Proof in writing that applicant living in a place known as Rwanda
•    Bring at least two Rwandans who know the applicant as a Rwandan
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Renouncing Rwandan Nationality and/or citizenship:
•    Complete Citizenship Renounciation application form
•    An application letter explaining the reason to renounce nationality
•    Handing over of identity documents and travel documents issued while they were Rwandan
•    Proof of acquisition of another nationality
•    Police clearance or certificate proving the applicant is not subject to legal proceedings in Rwanda.
•    A proof of payment of 40QR (This fee is nonrefundable and nontransferable).

Submission of an incomplete application, in short of one or more of the able requirements will be returned.
